Font and Flora

12x 24 inch sculptural acrylic painting on birch panel (not for sale)

In 2017 I had left a job in parish ministry and was brainstorming possible names for an art business. I remember praying about it, and asking God to give me a name that embodied my experiences as a person of faith, an avid gardener, and an artist. A few days later the name came to me— “Font and Flora.”

When people hear this name I assume they take “Font” to mean calligraphy or typeface. That is one element, but for me the deeper meaning behind the word has to do with Baptism and being a person of faith in a community of believers. The name pushes me to contemplate the ways I, a believer of the Triune God, engage with the world around me.

This piece, which I have also titled ‘Font and Flora,’ is the first of a theological art series I am creating in 2023. I invite you take a moment to look and reflect on the image however you feel led. Perhaps the painting makes you feel strongly about a subject, or maybe you feel a sense of peace- just take a moment to acknowledge those feelings. Maybe you are reminded of a hymn or a piece of scripture- take a moment to read those passages and sing those hymns. Perhaps you feel the need to pray or spend a moment outside to appreciate the wonder of creation- write your prayer and document your reflections.
